Generative Engine Optimization

What is GEO? Explained simply and honestly.

More and more people no longer ask a search engine, they ask an AI. Here you’ll learn what Generative Engine Optimization means, how it works, what it can do and where its limits are.

01

What does GEO mean?

GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization. It means making sure that AI systems which write their own answers know a business, describe it correctly and mention it when it fits.

“Generative engines” are systems such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and the AI Overviews in Google Search. Instead of a list of links, they deliver a finished answer in full sentences. To do that, they read information from many sources and summarise it.

The term comes from research: scientists at Princeton University and IIT Delhi introduced it in 2023 and published it at the KDD 2024 conference [1]. They show that the visibility of content in AI answers can be changed measurably through targeted adjustments.

In short

SEO makes sure you are found in the list of results. GEO makes sure you are named in the answer.

02

How does GEO work?

An AI doesn’t make up its recommendation out of nothing. It relies on what it can read about your business. GEO starts exactly there: with the sources.

1 · Question“Who’s a good roofer near me?”
2 · SourcesWebsite, Google Business Profile, maps, directories, reviews, press
3 · Cross-checkWhat is clear, current and confirmed more than once?
4 · AnswerA few names with a short reason
Simplified diagram. Providers don’t fully disclose how exactly a system selects and weighs its sources.

If the sources contradict each other, for example on opening hours, address or services, the AI is uncertain. It then prefers a business it has a clear picture of, or it passes on wrong information. GEO makes sure the same correct, well-supported information appears everywhere and that your website answers your customers’ questions clearly.

03

How is GEO different from classic SEO?

GEO doesn’t replace SEO, it builds on it. But the goals and metrics are different.

Classic SEOGEO
GoalRank high in the list of resultsBe named and described correctly in the AI answer
What users getA list of links to compare themselvesA finished answer with a few recommendations
Key leversKeywords, technology, linksConsistent facts in every source, clear answers, evidence, reviews
MetricPosition, clicks, visitorsHow often and how accurately you appear in answers

The GEO study shows how little classic tricks help in AI answers [1]: pure keyword stuffing even made content less visible in the generated answers. Supported statements, figures and quotations, on the other hand, had a clearly positive effect.

04

Why is GEO becoming relevant for businesses?

Because where people ask their questions is changing. The figures come from the providers themselves and from independent surveys.

Even people who still google classically increasingly see an AI summary first. Back in 2024, the research firm Gartner predicted that traditional search engine volume would drop by 25% by 2026 as people switch to AI assistants [9]. That is a forecast, not a measurement, but it shows the direction.

05

How does GEO affect visibility in AI systems?

There is no page two in an AI answer. If you aren’t named, many users won’t even consider you.

Pew Research Center analysed the behaviour of 900 US adults in real Google searches [2]. When an AI summary appeared, users clicked on a search result only half as often. They almost never clicked on links inside the summary.

For a business, this means: what is visible is mainly what appears in the answer itself. GEO therefore improves the basis on which the AI decides: consistent business details, a website with clear answers to real customer questions, verifiable evidence and a good reputation in reviews.

06

Why should businesses deal with this now?

  • Usage is growing fast. Younger customers in particular already ask AI often [7].
  • Errors spread. In the Bitkom survey, 42% of AI users said they had already received false or made-up information [7]. Outdated details about your business can be passed on to many people this way.
  • Corrections take time. It takes weeks for sources to be updated and for AI systems to pick up the new details. Starting early means a clean picture sooner.
  • The basics pay off twice. Clean data, clear content and good reviews also help in classic search and with customers directly.

07

Which concrete measures are part of GEO?

GEO isn’t a single setting but a set of measures that work together.

  1. 01

    Make business details consistent

Name, address, phone number, opening hours and services are identical on Google, Bing, Apple Maps and in industry directories.

  2. 02

    Fix errors at the source

Wrong details are corrected where the AI reads them. That’s the only way they disappear for good.

  3. 03

    Make the website understandable

Clear service descriptions, service areas, answers to common customer questions and structured data that matches the visible content [10].

  4. 04

    Provide evidence

Concrete details, figures and proof instead of generic marketing language. Exactly this increased visibility in the research [1].

  5. 05

    Strengthen reviews

A simple system that gets satisfied customers to actually write down their experience.

  6. 06

    Measure and adjust

Ask the same customer questions in several AI systems regularly and document changes.

08

09

How can success be measured?

Not with a single number, but with a fixed set of questions that is asked again and again.

Mention rate

In how many answers to typical customer questions is your business named?

Accuracy

Are address, opening hours, services and service area correct in the answers?

Placement

Are you named first or only mentioned in passing?

Competition

Which competitors does the AI name instead, and how does that change?

Because AI answers vary from query to query, we measure with the same questions in several systems and compare the before and after. Traffic from Google’s AI features can also be tracked in Google Search Console, where it is counted in the performance report under “Web” [10].

10

What are the limits and uncertainties?

  • No guaranteed placements. Nobody can fully control what an AI answers. Serious providers therefore don’t promise a specific position.
  • Answers vary. The same question can be answered differently depending on the system, time, wording and location.
  • The systems change. Models and data sources are updated constantly, so results have to be checked regularly.
  • No secret trick. Google itself states there are no additional requirements or special markup for its AI features [10]. GEO is mainly clean, consistent work on data, content and reputation.
  • Time lag. Corrections don’t take effect immediately. It can take weeks until sources are updated and picked up by the systems.

11

Which businesses benefit most from GEO?

Any business whose customers look for a recommendation before they hire someone.

TradesMedical and dental practicesLaw and tax firmsRestaurants and cafésLocal service providersRegional B2B providers

GEO is especially worthwhile when there are several providers in your region, when jobs are high in value, or when customers compare carefully in advance. Because we only work with one business per industry and region, it’s best to talk to us before your competitor does.
